Emailing Photos

Emailing in XifPix is simply a matter of choosing a contact from your Contacts on the iPhone and clicking on an email address. In order to send to a photo upload or blog site that accepts images by email you must have this email address specified in your contacts prior to emailing.

The mail is sent using your own mail account, which must support SMTP connections from any network. These are services such as GMail and MobileMe.

Broadband and Cable companies often restrict access to Connections directly on their network so you may not be able to use  these accounts. Please check with your ISP to see if your ISP account allows access to its SMTP servers in this manner.

As XifPix does not have access to your email details on the iPhone you should enter the account you want to use in the settings screen. The data that is required is usually your username and password and the address of the SMTP server. Normally the server is similar to your username or email address. E.g for GMail your username will be something like This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The SMTP server would then be smtp.gmail.com.

XifPix will attempt to auto construct the Server address from your username if it is in an email format and you can test the mail connection directly from the settings screen to make sure you have the right details before trying to upload an image.

GPS or Map Location

XifPix by default will use the Location provided by the iPhone's Location service. This can either GPS, cell triangulation or the Skyhook WIFI mechanism. If a location has been fixed within the last few seconds then this will be inserted automatically for new Pictures taken in XifPix.

A location that is older than that or when you are using a saved image will always result in you being prompted whether you want to use the current location (or none at all).

Alternatively, you can choose a location by the using the Map tab in the application which will be used as the image location if you confirm this action. You can change the location in the image as many times as you want and simply tap on the Location section of the Tag screen if you want to reset this back to the current or last location.

The location is stored in a  standard format and any EXIF reader will be able to pick these up. Serivices such as Picasa and Flickr can use the embedded location to automatically provide a Map view of your images online.

Photo Tagging

Data entered in XifPix for as photo is always added into the image itself using meta tags that are in an EXIF format. This includes caption and comment tags as well as the usual GeoTags.

You can also use XifPix to edit other EXIF tags such as 'Make of Camera' and 'Software' used, as well as add your own EXIF tags that are not included by default such as 'Copyright'.

Most tagging applications on the iPhone do not insert the tags into the image instead they upload the tags alongside the image as Text. The services such as Flickr etc then use these extra tags to set properties of the picture.

In this respect XifPix performs a similar function to desktop tagging software or a number of online services. However, unlike these services you do not send your location to a third party to tag the photo, instead it is performed on the phone.

Social Network Upload

For users of Picasa and Facebook XifPix can be used to directly upload images with your embedded EXIF tags. The upload is performed using the web APIs available form each of these services.

The images are uploaded to your default or drop box folder where you can log onto the site in Safari on the iPhone and manage the pictures as you would normally.

FaceBook

Facebook's terms and conditions require users to log in using its own web interface. So when you first want to upload directly to Facebook XifPix will present the Facebook login pages embedded in the application. You should follow these screens and authorise XifPix to upload pictures to your account. This process involves logging into Facebook and then pressing the generate button on the subsequent page. This will then show you a Code thaqt XifPix will automatically pickup from the page. Press the done button in the top toolbar on the phone and XifPix will complete the upload.

For subsequent uploads XifPix will attempt to use the auth token provided by Facebook so you do not have to login again. However, this token's lifespan is indeterminate so you may have to login again intermittently.

Picasa

Picasa does not require you to use a web interface to login so you can set your username and password in the settings screen. These will be used to login to Picasa in the background so the upload will be automatic. You can choose not to store these in the settings and Picasa will prompt you to login every so often in the same manner Facebook does.
