XifPix and the JargonFile are written in the UK. The developers on the projects have experience in many areas of development including Media, Publishing, Telecoms and Banking. XifPix The application is intended to be simple to use to allow users to easily upload or email images, and for these images to be able to retain EXIF information inserted by the user on the phone. Although many apps include Geo information along with pictures when emailing or uploading to Social network sites. The information is best embedded in the image and the best place to edit this is on the phone when you are doing the sending. XifPix is intended to make this easy. Although XifPix is not open source, we do believe that some of the experience in developing the app can benefit the community at large. Hence we have made the EXIF library avaliable under a GPL license. Note this is not LGPL. This means that if you are developing a GPL product you can use the library under the GPL license as the community (including us) will also potentially benefit from your work, which seems fair. However, if you are developing a commercial or non-GPL product then we think it is fair the developers of the intellectual property used in these applications share in any potential revenues. Accordingly, for these types of products you can purchase an alternative license to the EXIF library which means you are not required to release your own project under a GPL license.
The Jargon File The JargonFile is an iPhone version of the famous Jargon File. The file is a glossary of hacker slang maintained and amended over the last 40 years. The orginal file was started by Raphael Finkel at Stanford in 1975 and after many custodians is now maintained by Eric S. Raymond and Guy Steele. Eric is the editor of the print version, "The New Hacker's Dictionary". You can order the 3rd edition of the book complete with Guy's famous Crunchly cartoons from most bookstores. While the Jargon file is freely available online it is not the most convenient form for reading on the iPhone and we hope this app helps you enjoy the file as much as we do.
